Egg Timer — Soft, Jammy & Hard Boiled Egg Timer

A free egg timer that knows how you like your eggs. Tap Soft, Jammy, Medium or Hard above, lower your eggs into boiling water and press start. It keeps counting if you switch apps or tabs, and sounds a loud alarm when they're done — so the yolk ends up exactly how you wanted it.

Boiled Egg Times at a Glance

Times are for large eggs (the standard 600 g dozen in Australia) straight from the fridge, lowered into water that's already at a rolling boil.

Time Yolk White Best for
4 min Very runny, warm Just set, a little soft near the yolk Dipping soldiers
6 min Runny centre Fully set Classic soft-boiled egg in a cup
7 min Jammy, fudgy edges Firm Ramen, salads, toast
8 min Mostly set, soft middle Firm Lunchboxes, grain bowls
10 min Fully set, still bright Firm Egg sandwiches, devilled eggs
12 min Firm and crumbly Firm Egg salad, grating

How to Boil Eggs Perfectly

  1. Boil the water first — bring a saucepan of water to a rolling boil. Use enough to cover the eggs by about 2 cm.
  2. Lower the eggs in gently with a spoon, straight from the fridge, and press start on the timer straight away.
  3. Keep it at a gentle boil — turn the heat down slightly so the eggs don't bounce and crack.
  4. Cool them fast — when the alarm sounds, move the eggs into a bowl of iced or very cold water for a couple of minutes. This stops the cooking and makes them easier to peel.

Adjusting the Time

  • Extra-large or jumbo eggs — add about 30 seconds to a minute.
  • Small eggs or eggs at room temperature — take off about a minute.
  • Lots of eggs in a small pot — the water takes longer to come back to the boil, so add a little time or use a bigger pan.
  • Steaming instead of boiling — similar times work in a steamer basket over boiling water, and steamed eggs are often easier to peel.

Use the −1/+1 buttons to fine-tune any preset, or type an exact number of minutes and press Set.

Who Should Eat Firm Yolks?

Australian food safety advice is that pregnant women, young children, older people and anyone with a weakened immune system should eat eggs cooked until both the white and the yolk are firm. For them, use the Hard or Extra firm setting.

Prefer a Timer You Can Touch?

A wind-up or digital kitchen timer keeps greasy fingers off your phone and the time where you can see it. Need something else for dinner? The online timer takes any length up to five hours, and the tea timer handles the cuppa afterwards.

Egg Timer — FAQ

How long do you boil an egg for a soft yolk?

About 6 minutes for a large egg straight from the fridge, lowered into water that's already boiling. For a very runny, dippy yolk, try 4 to 5 minutes.

How long do you boil an egg for hard boiled?

About 10 minutes for a fully set yolk that's still bright yellow, or 12 minutes for a firmer, crumbly yolk. Cool the eggs in cold water straight away.

Why are my boiled eggs hard to peel?

Very fresh eggs are harder to peel. Cooling them quickly in iced water, peeling under running water, or steaming instead of boiling all help.

Does the timer keep running if I switch apps?

Yes. The countdown is based on the clock, not the tab, so it stays accurate in the background and the alarm is scheduled to sound on time. The time left also shows in the browser tab title.
