The 50/10 Rhythm
Fifty minutes of focused work followed by a ten-minute break is one of the most popular alternatives to the classic 25/5 Pomodoro. The longer block gives you time to sink into harder work — writing, coding, problem sets — and the hourly rhythm is easy to plan a day around. Our guide to 25/5 vs 50/10 helps you choose.
- Pick one task and decide what "done" looks like for this block.
- Start the timer and put your phone out of reach.
- When it rings, really stop — stand up, move, get water — then start the next block with the 10 minute timer for your break.
Other Uses for 50 Minutes
- Lectures and lessons — many university classes and school periods run around 50 minutes.
- Exam sections — practise a section of a longer paper under time pressure.
- Workouts — a full gym session with warm-up and cool-down.

50 Minute Timer — FAQ
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The countdown is based on the clock, not the tab, so it stays accurate in the background and the alarm is scheduled to sound on time. The time left also shows in the browser tab title.
Is 50/10 better than 25/5?
Neither is better for everyone. 25/5 suits tasks that are hard to start or need frequent resets; 50/10 suits deep work that takes a while to get into. Try both for a week and keep what works.
